More railway stamps (previous alphabetical order)
The Great Northern Railway is one of the few railways that did not use control numbers on their stamps.
"GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY", 1/2 p red and black "ONE
NEWSPAPER", 1 p lilac "TWO NEWSPAPERS" and 2 p
blue "FOUR NEWSPAPERS" (with large and small arms)
"RAILWAY COMPANY" at the bottom: 1 p, 3 p red (value
black). Also with "PREPAID PARCEL AT OWNERS RISK"
overprint. "NEWSLETTER" at the bottom: "101 MILES
TO 200 MILES" 3 p red and black.
I've also seen the 2 p, 3 p and 4 p in the same design.
"GRAIN SAMPLES ONE POUND OR UNDER" , orange and black.
Two 1 p blue on white perforated stamps are listed in Walter Morley's catalogue; one with Belfast and the other with Dublin. I have not seen these stamps.
A 2 p black perforated is listed in Walter Morley's catalogue. I have not seen this stamp.
Orange paper with green control line "1 Newspapers
only", "2 Newspapers only" and "4 Newspapers
only". A similar design should exist for "3 Newspapers
only".
"1 NEWSPAPER ONLY". With 2 different capital lettering
types.
1860 issue: The following values exist: 3 lbs blue, 6 lbs blue,
12 lbs blue, 24 lbs blue, 48 lbs blue, 3 lbs green, 6 lbs green,
12 lbs green, 24 lbs green, 48 lbs green. Surcharged with
"NORTHERN DIVISION UNDER 40 MILES" exists in the
values: 3 lbs red, 16 lbs red, 24 lbs red and 48 lbs red.
I've also seen a 1 p black on yellow, a 3 p black on green, a 4 p
red and a 5 p green. This design seems to have been still in use
in at least 1933. Note that the 1 p and 2 p black values are all
slightly different in design.
I've seen a souvenir sheet of the 21st anniversary of Great Western Society (1961-1982) in the above design but with inscription "LETTER EXCHANGE FEE", three stamps of 10 p each and "SPECIMEN" overprint.
I've seen in this design: with "S1" at bottom 4 p
black, 5 p black on lilac, 6 p black on blue, 7 p black on red, 8
p black on violet, 9 p black on yellow, 1 Sh black on lilac; with
"S2" at the bottom: 6 p black on grey; with
"S2" on top: 6 p black on grey. Also 2 Sh black with no
numbers.

This railway company also seems to have issued an airmail stamp (inscription "G.W.R. AIRM MAIL" with an image of an earoplane, 3 p green, issued in 1933).
"G.W.R. PREPAID PARCEL STAMP LABEL" from 1911.
1 1/2 p "LABEL Under 5 Lbs." black on green (also with
"OPEN AT BOTH ENDS"). 3 p black on lilac "5 lbs.
not above 14 lbs."
"ANY STATION WEST OF DINGWALL"; the values 1/4 p, 1/2
p, 1 p, 2 p, 3 p, 4 p, 5 p, 6 p, 7 p, 8 p, 9 p, 10 p and 1 Sh
exists (all black on lilac).
"Stations twitxt Perth Keith & Bon-bridge"; the
values 1/4 p, 1/2 p, 1 p, 2 p, 3 p, 4 p, 5 p, 6 p, 7 p, 8 p, 9 p,
10 p, 11 p and 1 Sh exist (all in black).
"Between BONAR-BRIDGE AND GOLSPIE": 1 p black on green
"Open at both Ends". The values 1/4 p, 1/2 p, 1 p, 2 p,
3 p, 4 p, 5 p, 6 p, 7 p, 8 p, 10 p, 11 p and 1 Sh exist (all in
black on green).
"Between GOLSPIE AND HELMSDALE": 0 1/4 p black on lilac
"Open at both Ends". The values 1/4 p, 1/2 p, 1 p, 2 p,
3 p, 4 p, 5 p, 6 p (all in black on lilac).
"Between HELMSDALE THRUSO AND WICK": 0 1/4 p black on
yellow "Open at both Ends". The values 1/4 p, 1/2 p, 1
p, 2 p, 3 p, 4 p exist (all in black on yellow).
Issued in 1914; I've seen a 1 Sh red with a 1916 cancel. Also a 9
p red with "Issued at INVERNESS". The Highland Railway
and several other railways issued similar labels. Click here for more details.
"Joint Label" 2 1/4 p black on orange.
3/4 p black on brown.
I've seen the same label in the value 6 p, also in black on
green.
Walter Morley only lists one stamp: 1 1/2 p blue, prepaid newpaper parcel.
"PRICE 1/2 d", "PREPAID NEWSPAPER",
"PRICE 2 d" green and 3 Lb blue "PREPAID NEWSPAPER
PARCEL", I've also seen a "PRICE 1 d" brown stamp.
In 1905 the name of the company was changed to "HULL & BARNSLEY RAILWAY".
With the new company's name "HULL AND BARNSLEY RAILWAY
CO". I've also seen the 2 p green.
1/2 p "ONE Newspaper only" (reduced size)
Sorry, no image available yet. Walter Morley lists a 3 p grey parcel stamp.
"KNOTT END RAILWAY" 8 p blue, used in 1919. The
Highland Railway and several other railways issued similar
labels. Click here for more details.
In this design "LANCASHIRE &" on top,
"YORKSHIRE RLY." at the bottom I have seen 1/2 p, 1 p,
2 p, 3 p, 6 p (all in red).
In this design "LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY"
written in a circle, I have seen 1 p, 2 p, 3 p, 4 p (all in red)
Issued around 1914 or earlier. I've also seen 4 p, 6 p, 9 p, 1 Sh
and 1 Sh 6 p (all in black).
"PREPAID PARCEL STAMP" 1 p green and 2 p red.
