Until 1923 many railway companies existed. After that, many of them were joined and only four main railways resulted: the London Midland & Scottish Railway, the London & North Eastern Railway, the Southern Railway and the Great Western Railway.
Three values exist: 1 p black on white, 2 p black on green and 3
p black on lilac. Note the different type of the 3 p stamps.
The Bishop Castle Railway opened in October 1865, but closed down again in January 1867.
"BISHOPS CASTLE RAILWAY COMPANY PREPPAID NEWSPAPER PARCEL AT
OWNER'S RISK." 1/2 p green and 1 p green. The London and
North Western Railway Company issued very similar labels.
The Walter Morley catalogue only lists a 1/2 p black on blue.
Note the two types of the 1/2 p and 2 p black on green, also a 1
p black on yellow.
Larger sized stamps.
"B&ER Newpaper Parcel" 2 p black on yellow.
Normally these stamps should have a signature.
Walter Morley mentions only one stamp: a 1 p black on white stamp for this company, issued in 1886. Did Morley misidentify the 3 p black on rose stamp for a "B and G Railway" stamp?
2 p yellow with more text at the bottom and "FOR NEWSPAPERS
ONLY" on top.
I've also seen 8 p and 1 Sh in this design, all in red.
Black on green, weight under 5 Lbs. Also 1 p black on yellow
(under 3 lbs.) and 4 p black on yellow (under 28 lbs); similar
stamps in black on yellow should exist for 1/2 p (not exceeding 1
lb), 2 p (under 7 lbs), 3 p (under 14 lbs) and 6 p (under 56
lbs).
"Scotland to England."; I have also seen 6 p on grey
paper in this design.
"PARCEL STAMP. CALEDONIAN" on top "RAILWAY"
at the bottom and side ornaments 5 p blue, issued around 1907.
I've also seen 3 p blue and 4 p blue.
"PARCEL STAMP. CALEDONIAN RAILWAY." with city name at
bottom with "Issued at" and side ornaments. I've seen 1
p, 2 p, 3 p, 4 p, 5 p, all in blue.
"PARCEL STAMP. CALEDONIAN RAILWAY.", with city name on
top, "PAID." on the left, slighlty taller in design.
I've seen 4 p, 6 p, 10 p, 11 p, 2 Sh, 2 Sh 2 p, 10 Sh (all in
blue). The stationname changes, I've seen Callander, Perth,
Strathaven (Central), Glasgow (Central). The North British
Railways issued very similar labels in green. The Highland
Railway and several other railways issued similar labels. Click here for more details.
"PARCEL STAMP. CALEDONIAN RY."; with vertical lines in
the bottom part, "PAID." on the left. I've seen 2 Sh
and 3 Sh, all in blue.
"PARCEL STAMP. CALEDONIAN RAILWAY."; with vertical
lines in the bottom part, "PAID." on the left. 1 Sh
(without station name),
2 p black "Under 7 lbs.", 6 p black "Under 56
lbs.". I've also seen a 1 p black "Under 3 lbs".
1/2 p black on lilac, 1 p black, 1 1/2 p black on blue, 2 p black
on yellow, 3 p black on green, 6 p black on lilac; I've seen
different types.
Much smaller type: 1/2 p black on lilac
"NEWSPAPER AND BOOK STAMP." black on lilac.
15 stamps (including varieties) are listed in the Walter Morley catalogue.
"PREPAID NEWSPAPER PARCEL", is this the 2 p red stamp
with blue overprint mentioned in Morley?
Probably the 1 p, 2 p and 3 p brown mentioned in Morley. Note the
different type of the "1" in the 1 p.
"C.&W.J. RAILWAY PREPAID SINGLE NEWSPAPER"; 1/2 p
red and 1 p red.
Walter Morley lists one stamp: a 1/2 p black on rose 'one newspaper only' for this company, I have not seen this stamp.
"Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway" 4 p blue,
still on letter (image obtained from a Grosvenor auction), used
in 1921. The Highland Railway and several other railways issued

The values 1 p blue, 4 p blue and 6 p blue exist.
This railway in Cork (Ireland) opened in 1850 and closed in 1932.
"SUBSCRIBER'S PARCELS": 2 p blue. I've also seen a 1 p
red.
Cornwall Railway, around 1870 (1 p black stamp) and 1883 stamp
A railway company in Wales which opened in 1859. This company is not listed in Walter Morley's catalogue.
I've also seen a 2 p black on lilac in this design.
With a very peculiar cancel consisting of a grid of lozenges.
