Other Railway stamps

Until 1923 many railway companies existed. After that, many of them were joined and only four main railways resulted: the London Midland & Scottish Railway, the London & North Eastern Railway, the Southern Railway and the Great Western Railway.

Barry Railway

Three values exist: 1 p black on white, 2 p black on green and 3 p black on lilac. Note the different type of the 3 p stamps.

Bishops Castle Railway Company

The Bishop Castle Railway opened in October 1865, but closed down again in January 1867.

"BISHOPS CASTLE RAILWAY COMPANY PREPPAID NEWSPAPER PARCEL AT OWNER'S RISK." 1/2 p green and 1 p green. The London and North Western Railway Company issued very similar labels.

The Walter Morley catalogue only lists a 1/2 p black on blue. Note the two types of the 1/2 p and 2 p black on green, also a 1 p black on yellow.

Larger sized stamps.

Bristol and Exeter Railway

"B&ER Newpaper Parcel" 2 p black on yellow. Normally these stamps should have a signature.

Walter Morley mentions only one stamp: a 1 p black on white stamp for this company, issued in 1886. Did Morley misidentify the 3 p black on rose stamp for a "B and G Railway" stamp?

2 p yellow with more text at the bottom and "FOR NEWSPAPERS ONLY" on top.

British Railways

I've also seen 8 p and 1 Sh in this design, all in red.

Caledonian Railway

Black on green, weight under 5 Lbs. Also 1 p black on yellow (under 3 lbs.) and 4 p black on yellow (under 28 lbs); similar stamps in black on yellow should exist for 1/2 p (not exceeding 1 lb), 2 p (under 7 lbs), 3 p (under 14 lbs) and 6 p (under 56 lbs).

"Scotland to England."; I have also seen 6 p on grey paper in this design.

The stationname changes, I've seen Callander, Perth, Strathaven (Central), Glasgow (Central). The North British Railways issued very similar labels in green. The Highland Railway and several other railways issued similar labels. Click here for more details.
