Postage due stamps

Postage due stamp of the French Colonies with a blue "REUNION SAINT PAUL" cancel from 1894.

Due to a shortage of stamps, postage due stamps of the French Colonies were used instead from 31 December 1900 to 20 January 1901.

1889 Inscription "Reunion Centimes a Percevoir Postes"

Genuine 5 c black and 10 c black 15 c black

  5 c black
  10 c black
  15 c black
  20 c black
  30 c black

Ten different types exist of each stamp. If I'm informed correctly, the ten types are the same for each value. Furthermore there are two printings, one in 1889 and a second one in 1892 (see Serrane guide for more details).

The types (as I think they should be, with the help of the Serrane guide):

The ten types, first printing, image obtained from a Siegel auction.

The first printing was on yellowish paper and was only done for the values 5, 10, 20 and 30 c. The second printing was done for the values 5, 15, 10 and 30 c (in that order).

Types 4, 5 and 10 have the upper "S" ornament inverted.

First printing? Type 1; First "e" lower and "n" higher in "Centimes". "s" of this word smaller.

First printing, Type 2; Space between "t" and "i" of "centimes", space between "o" and "i" of "percevoir", break in the left inner frameline left to the value.

First printing, Type 3; "E" of "REUNION" too large. First upper ornament on the left hand side (the insect alike ornaments) has an extension to the left (larger left antenna).

First printing. Type 4. Upper "S" ornament inverted. Third insect alike ornament has smaller left antenna.

First printing. Type 5, Upper "S" inverted. Line above "POSTES" quite short.

First printing? Type 6; "E" of "REUNION" too large, "O" of "POSTES" open at the bottom.

First printing, Type 7; "t" of "Centimes" smaller, 5th insect alike ornament has smaller antennas.

First printing? Type 8; ornament above the "ES" of "POSTES" broken at the bottom. The first "r" of "percevoir" is smaller.

First printing? Type 9; fifth insect alike ornament has the right antenna shorter.

First printing. Type 10, upper "S" ornament inverted. The fifth 'insect' ornament has shorter antennas.

Second printing, type 2; parts of the text "Centimes" missing and misplaced.

Second printing. Type 5, Upper "S" inverted. Line above "POSTES" quite short. In the second printing, the upper right corner is very open.

Second printing, type 7; upper right corner damaged. Line above "POSTES" extends too far to the right.

Second printing. Type 8; ornament above the "ES" of "POSTES" broken at the bottom. The first "r" of "percevoir" is smaller. In the second printing, the right bottom corner has an extension. I've noticed that the "O" of "REUNION" is open at the top (I'm not sure if this is always the case).

Second printing. Type 10, upper "S" ornament inverted. The fifth 'insect' ornament has shorter antennas. Furthermore, in the second printing, the inner bottom frameline is connected to the outer left frameline.

Type 2? but with "p" of "percevoir" too far to the left.

A 10 c which does not appear to correspond to any of the genuine types. It has a large space between the "O" and "N" of "REUNION".

Perhaps a forgery of the 30 c value. It does not correspond to any of the 10 genuine types.

Forgeries exist of these stamps, for example the forger Fournier is known to have offered forgeries of these stamps (see the Fournier Album). Examples of forgeries. The 10 c and 15 c have a very small "s" in "Centimes". In the 20 c and 30 c, the first "e" of "Centimes" is very small. In all values, the "r" of "percevoir" is too close to the right frame line. Note that the Fournier forgeries were printed in a block of 5 stamps, containing all 5 values.

(Fournier forgeries)

Parts from a Fournier Album with Fournier forgeries.

Probably a forgery mentioned in the Serrane guide, the word "POSTES" is too large and the "O" of this word is placed lower. All four corners have holes.

Two other very suspicious stamps.

Most likely a forgery. "Centimes" too far to the right. Upper "S" ornament inverted.

Forgery with the line under "REUNION" touching the right inner frameline. The words "REUNION" and "POSTES" are too wide. The upper "S" shaped ornament is inverted (as in some of the genuine types).

Very dangerous forgeries also seem to exist, as well as reprints. I have no further information.

I have seen some double and triple impressions, I'm not sure if these are genuine.

In the 'pages reserves aux specialistes' of the Fournier Album (with thanks to Gerhard Lang who went to Geneva to see them), I have seen a forgery with cancel "REUNION 2E/20 JANV 92 ST BENOIT". This forgery has slightly smaller letters (they leave more space in between the circles), also the "C" of "CENTIMES" is very close to the inner circle and the "S" of this word is very strange (inverted?).

I've seen modern computer generated Hialeah forgeries of these stamps.
