Return To Catalogue - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 1 - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 2 - Panelli - Spiotti - Venturini
Note: on my website many of the
pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.
Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century from Turin. He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were previously attributed to the forger Angelo Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually 'overinked'. When Oneglia applied a watermark on his forgeries, it is very clearly visible. His watermarks are impressed instead of being real watermarks. Oneglia also collaborated closely with A.Venturini and E.Spiotti. The exact relationships that these forgers had is not clear up to this day.
Most forgeries made by Oneglia were printed one at a time, with the only exception perhaps the second issue of Newfoundland, which were printed in row of 6, all 6 values below each other.
Oneglia forgeries, 1906 catalogue, "Datia" to "Fidji"
The 1882 and 1871 postage due forgeries all have a "CHAMBERY 2E/26 SEPT 72" cancel.
The same forgery of the 1871 due issue with "CHAMBERY 2E/26
SEPT 72" cancel pasted on an old letter. I doubt the
"LIBOURNE 2E/24 SEPT. (32)" cancel is real?

Since these Faridkot forgeries are marked "N", they were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in the foreword of his catalogue).
The 1884 forgeries have the cancel "JAKOBSTAD PIETARSAARI 3 VIII 85" (also with Russian inscription of the town Jakobstad).
These Gambia forgeries are also known as Spiotti forgeries. I've only seen them with the typical bars with "1" Oneglia cancel.
Front and backview of the 6 p value (with oil watermark clearly
visible).
In the 1899 "Catalogue des Imitations des Timbres-Postes d'Italie et Anciens Duches, Bresil, Cap de Bonne Esperance, Gambie, Iles Joniennes, Maurice ecc. ecc.", he says on page 30: "Je puis appliquer le Timbre Gibraltar sur les Timbres-Poste de Bermuda, a fr.0,50 par piece, prix net, et autre surcharges, porto extra"; translated: "I can apply overprints of Gibraltar on Bermuda stamps for 0.50 Francs a piece, excluding postage."
