Return To Catalogue - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 1 - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 2 - Panelli - Spiotti - Venturini
Note: on my website many of the
pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;

Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century from Turin. He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were previously attributed to the forger Angelo Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually 'overinked'. When Oneglia applied a watermark on his forgeries, it is very clearly visible. His watermarks are impressed instead of being real watermarks. Oneglia also collaborated closely with A.Venturini and E.Spiotti. The exact relationships that these forgers had is not clear up to this day.

I presume the same basic forgeries as used for other Indian States were used for these Nabha forgeries. I have not been able to find an image yet.
In his foreword to the Supplement, Oneglia mentions that the stamps marked with a "*" will only be ready by the end of the month.
These are the New South Wales forgeries described in the book 'The Oneglia Engraved Forgeries' by Robson Lowe & Carl Walske (1996). One of the main distinguishing characteristics of this forgery appears to be the protruding upper lip of the Queen. Also, in the 1851 values, the upper part (as both sides of "SOUTH") is always the same, while it is different in the genuine stamps for each value.
A similar forgery (same facial expression) of the 2 p value can
be found in 'Philatelic Forgers, Their Lives and Works' by
V.E.Tyler in which it is attributed to Angelo Panelli.
In his foreword to the Supplement, Oneglia mentions that all
Natal stamps will only be ready by the end of the month.
These are the Natal forgeries described in the book 'The Oneglia
Engraved Forgeries' by Robson Lowe & Carl Walske (1996). The
1 shilling value is not given there (since it is not engraved?),
yet the "Postage" overprints are identical to the lower
values in the above forgeries, so I conclude that this 1 shilling
stamp was also forged by Oneglia.

These Orange Free State forgeries appear to have a typical bars with "1" cancel as often used by Oneglia. The perforation is also not very well done.

I think the above Tobago forgeries are indeed made by Oneglia
for the following reasons:
1) Some of them are bearing the bars with "1" numeral
cancel as often used by Oneglia
2) Clearly on some of them an impressed watermark was used or an
oil watermark (one of the trademarks of Oneglia).
3) These forgeries are also known as Panelli forgeries. Panelli
is known to have sold Oneglia forgeries.

Although I am aware of several kinds of forgeries of Queensland, I have not seen the one made by Oneglia. These forgeries are described in the book 'The Oneglia Engraved Forgeries' by Robson Lowe & Carl Walske (1996), where an image of a 1 penny forgery is shown.

In my opinion, these are Oneglia forgeries, since they appear to have the typical Oneglia cancel (bars with "G") and the rather defective perforation found on many other Oneglia forgeries.
These forgeries were made (or at least sold) by Panelli I've been
told. They appear with a very clear numeral "35"
cancel. However, in the book 'The Oneglia Engraved Forgeries' by
Robson Lowe & Carl Walske (1996), these forgeries are
attributed to Oneglia, yet the perforation and overprints are
clearly different from the above Oneglia forgeries. Or could
these be the two types of forgeries offered in the above
pricelist?
