Return To Catalogue - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 1 - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 2 - Panelli - Spiotti - Venturini
Note: on my website many of the
pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.
Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century from Turin. He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were previously attributed to the forger Angelo Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually 'overinked'. When Oneglia applied a watermark on his forgeries, it is very clearly visible. His watermarks are impressed instead of being real watermarks. Oneglia also collaborated closely with A.Venturini and E.Spiotti. The exact relationships that these forgers had is not clear up to this day.

subsequently sold by the stamp forger Venturini.

These stamps seem to have been printed in at least a pair of two.
Here with "??IERRE 1E/6 MIQUE??" and "LIBREVILLE
CONGO FRANCAIS 1E/15 DEC ??" cancel.
Here with "DIEGO SUAREZ 2E/18 JANV 92" cancel. Also
"HELLE VILLE 1E/17 SEPT ?? NOSSI BE" cancel.
Since these Chile forgeries are marked "N", they
were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in
the foreword of his catalogue).
In an article in Chile Filatelico Ano XX, No 76, Santiago June
1947, page 60-63, the forgeries of the postage due stamps of
Chile are described and attributed to the stamp forger Mercier.
They appeared in or before 1899. Upon careful studying this
article, it turns out that these are the same forgeries that also
appear in the Fournier Album of Philatelic Forgeries (for both
cases in whole sheets).
Since I am not aware of any other forgeries of the postage due
stamps of Chile and since Oneglia got them from another forger,
it might be reasonable to assume that Oneglia offered these
Mercier forgeries here (further proof is that the same high
values were offered by Fournier and by Oneglia, while the lower
values were exluded in both lists). However, I have no solid
proof for this assumption (yet). The forgeries of Monaco were
apparently also first made by Mercier and the Oneglia forgeries
of Brazil turn out to be the same ones that are sometimes
attributed to Mercier as well.
Since these Jammu and Cashmir forgeries are marked "N", they were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in the foreword of his catalogue). The presence of the 'star' cancel and the bars with "G" cancel makes it highly likely that these stamps are actually Oneglia forgeries.
Corrientes. N |
|||
Number | Year | Description | Price in Fr. |
1860 | Effigie de la Liberté, série de 6 timbres ............................................................................................. | Fr. 1.-- |
Since these Corrientes forgeries are marked "N", they were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in the foreword of his catalogue).
The 1886 5 Franc Belgian Congo forgeries have a strange beard
and the lettering different. They (always?) have a "MATADI
28 JUIL 7 M 1887" in a single circle cancel.
I believe these are Oneglia forgeries for the following reasons:
1) The perforation is very badly done (as in other Ongelia
forgeries)
2) I've seen it offered in a batch with many other Oneglia
forgeries.
Congo Français. * |
|||
Number | Year | Description | Price in Fr. |

8 | 10 cent., sur 25 noir sur rose | Fr. -.80
9 | 15 cent., sur 25 noir sur rose | Fr. -.80 |
I presume the French Colonies forgeries (some are shown below) were used for these overprints (and most likely the cancel "LIBREVILLE 1E/15 DEC CONGO FRANCAIS" as well?). However, I have not been able to find such a forgery yet.
Here some French Colonies forgeries 1881 issue with cancel
"LIBREVILLE 1E/15 DEC ?? CONGO FRANCAIS"
Here some pairs of the French Colonies forgeries 1877 issue with
"LIBREVILLE CONGO FRANCAIS 1E/15 DEC ??" cancel.
Since these Cuba forgeries are marked "N", they were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in the foreword of his catalogue).

2 | 10 cent.,noir | Fr. -.40
3 | 15 cent.,noir t | Fr. 1.50
4 | 20 cent.,noir | Fr. 1.--
5 | 20 cent.,noir (this should probably have been 30 cent.) | Fr. 1.--
6 | 40 cent.,noir | Fr. 1.--
7 | 60 cent.,noir | Fr. 1.50

9 | 2 fr., brun | Fr. 2.50 | |
10 | 5 fr., brun | Fr. 3.-- | |
Série de 10 pieces | Fr. 12.-- |
These Cochinchine stamps are bogus stamps, first introduced by Georges Carion in 1895. I've seen two different kinds of these Cochinchine overprints. I do not know which one (or perhaps even yet another version) was offered here.
Côtes
des Somalis. N |

Number | Year | Description | Price in Fr. |
1894-1900: | |||
1 | 1894-1900 | 1 fr., olive et noir.................................................................................................................... | Fr. -.60 |
2 | 25 fr., rose et bleu | Fr. 2.50 |
Since these Somali Coast forgeries are marked "N", they were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in the foreword of his catalogue).
Crète.
* |
|||
Number | Year | Description | Price in Fr. |
1 | 1899 | Série de 5 pièces.................................................................................................................... | Fr. 5.-- |
2 | 1899 | Série de 18 pièces, sans étoile | Fr. 5.-- |
3 | 1899 | Série de 12 pièces, sans étoile | Fr. 2.50 |
The above cancelled forgeries appear to have the bar "1" cancel, which was often used by Oneglia. These forgeries did not appear yet in his 1898 and 1899 pricelists.
Here Cape Verde Oneglia forgeries with "GUINE"
overprint. They are also known as so-called Brazilian forgeries,
they have a dot at the right hand side of the "E" of
"CORREIO". They have the Oneglia bar "G"
cancels.
By the way, a different forgery type is listed as Oneglia forgery in the book 'Forgeries of Portugal and Colonies by D.J. Davies, 2002', Published by the Portuguese Philatelic Society: there a forgery Type 2 is said to be an Oneglia forgery. Yet it does not have an Oneglia cancel, while a forgery Type 5 actually appears to resemble the above forgeries. The fact that the bars with "1" cancel appears on the Cabo Verde forgeries and the bars with "G" on the Portugues Guinea ones appears proof enough to me that these are actually Oneglia forgeries.
Copied from 'Forgeries of Portugal and Colonies by D.J. Davies,
2002'. Forgery Type 5 here appears to have a bars with
"1" cancel.
