Return To Catalogue - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 1 - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 2 - Panelli - Spiotti - Venturini
Note: on my website many of the
pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.
Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century from Turin. He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were previously attributed to the forger Angelo Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually 'overinked'. When Oneglia applied a watermark on his forgeries, it is very clearly visible. His watermarks are impressed instead of being real watermarks. Oneglia also collaborated closely with A.Venturini and E.Spiotti. The exact relationships that these forgers had is not clear up to this day.
Oneglia forgeries, 1906 catalogue, "Parme"to "Sungei-Ujong"
These St.Vincent forgeries are often attibuted to the forger Panelli. In 'The Oneglia Engraved
Forgeries by Robson Lowe & Carl Walske (1996)' the stamp with
the image of the Queen are described, but not the 5 Shilling
stamps (presumably since they are not engraved).
The 1 Shilling has the "G" of "SHILLING"
quite different from the genuine stamps.
The 5 Shillings forgery has the "H" of
"SHILLING" slanting too much backwards.
Here the 5 Shillings forgery with the forged star watermark.
This 5 Shilings forgery proves that Oneglia used both the
Victoria 1V cancel and the 'star' cancel sometimes found on other
Oneglia forgeries, which strongly suggests that all stamps with
such a cancel originate from Oneglia (or one of his
collaborators). It also appears with the bars with "G"
cancel (see image above).

The above Tonga forgeries are classified as Oneglia forgeries by me since they bear the bars with "G" cancel which was often used by Oneglia on his forgeries. A rather similar genuine bar cancel with "TONGA" in the center also exists. The perforation is different from genuine stamps and the value indication is also different (compare with a genuine stamp).
Note the typical 'white eye' in these Turks Islands forgeries.
I've seen this forgery with a 'Star' watermark. This watermark
was probably made with grease or something. Sometimes these
forgeries are also attributed to the forger Panelli.
These forgeries are also listed in the book 'The Oneglia
Engraved Forgeries Commonly Attributed to Angelo Panelli' by
Robson Lowe and Carl Walske (1997)
The forged cancels are quite numerous: a bars cancel with
"G" in the center, a bars cancel with "1"
cancel, concentric circles or a star like cancel. All of these
cancels were also used on other forgeries made by Oneglia.
Undoubtedly the same basic forgery as shown above but with a
"1/2" overprint (not listed in the catalogue).
Tasmanie. N |

Number | Year | Description | Price in Fr. |
(Gravure en cuivre) |
|||
1 | 1860 | 6 pence, gris | Fr. 1.-- |
2 | 7 pence, violet (this should be 6 pence? as in the 1899 catalogue?) .................................................. | Fr. 1.--
1853 - Effigie à droite, cardes variés:
3 | 1853 | Série de 2 timbres | Fr. 2.-- |
Since these Tasmania forgeries are marked "N", they
were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in
the foreword of his catalogue).
The numbers 1 and 2 were already present in his 1898 catalogue.
I have not been able to find any images of these forgeries.

Since these Thessaly forgeries are marked "N", they
were not made by Oneglia, but by another forger (as mentioned in
the foreword of his catalogue).
I've only seen one forgery type of Thessaly (the one described in
Album Weeds), however the Serrane guide mentions that there are
two different types of forgeries for Thessaly. I presume it the
type that I have not seen before that was made by Oneglia.

Forgery of the French Colonies with a "PAPEETE 3E/14 FEVR 83
TAHITI" cancel, which also appears on all of the above
forgeries. I presume the 35 c was also used to create the 1882
forgery listed above.

Whole sheets of these Newfoundland forgeries, all values printed
on one sheet. It seems that Oneglia usually printed his forgeries
one by one and not in whole sheets by the way.
The Lowe and Walske book lists only "1" in bars
cancels, but I personally have only seen "N35" numeral
cancels on these forgeries.
