ONEGLIA FORGERIES, 1906 catalogue, "Naples et Sicile" to "Orange"

Return To Catalogue - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 1 - Oneglia forgeries, introduction, part 2 - Panelli - Spiotti - Venturini

Note: on my website many of the pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.

Erasmo Oneglia was an Italian forger in the late 19th century from Turin. He is famous for his engraved forgeries, but he also made photo-lithographed forgeries. Many of his forgeries were previously attributed to the forger Angelo Panelli. The engraved Oneglia forgeries are usually 'overinked'. When Oneglia applied a watermark on his forgeries, it is very clearly visible. His watermarks are impressed instead of being real watermarks. Oneglia also collaborated closely with A.Venturini and E.Spiotti. The exact relationships that these forgers had is not clear up to this day.

The lettering is completely different from the genuine stamps. Many of them have the cancel "NAPOLI 16 MAGG 61 12 M" or "NAPOLI 19 MAGG 61 12 M". This cancel is listed in the Serrane guide under the 1855 issue of Sardinia and is attributed to "I." of Genoa, I presume it refers to the forger Imperato. Imperato is known to have sold forgeries of Oneglia. I presume this is the case here. Further proof is that the 5 grana two color varieties are found in this forgery type.
In the book 'Philatelic Forgers, their Lives and Work' from V.E. Tyler, a page from the 'Philatelisten Zeitung 18, 100 (1905)' is reproduced with cancels from Oneglia. Among them is the cancel "NAPOLI 19 MAGG 63 12 M", very similar to the above cancels (but with date "63" instead of "61").

Oneglia is known to have used this fancy "Annullato" cancel on his forgeries of Naples as well (see: 'The Oneglia Engraved Forgeries by Robson Lowe & Carl Walske, 1996)
