The first stamps to be issued in India, were those of Scinde (see there for examples) in 1852.

(Reduced size)
1/2 a blue 1 a red 2 a green
A 1/2 a red was prepared, but never issued.

In the 1/2 a, there should be 9 1/2 triangles at the left and right borders of the stamp, the following stamp is a forgery (it has only 8 triangles). The blue stamp besides it is obviously from the same forger:

Other forgeries:

(Other forgery, reduced size)

(Could this be a product of Spiro?)

(A forgery with a very large 'chin')
It seems that the Moens made some unauthorized reprints of the 1/2 a and 2 a stamps in several bogus colours (black on blue, black on red etc.).
Reprints, literature: 'The identification of the Essays, Proofs & Reprints of the 1854 issue of India' by James A. Spence (1975).

Forgeries; there are many forgeries, (by the way, I'm not quite sure if the above shown stamps are genuine!), examples of forgeries:

(Reduced size)
I know that Fournier and Peter Winter (and probably many others) have made forgeries of both the normal and the inverted center stamps.

This stamp has the top and bottom cut off, therefore it is always imperforated at the top and bottom. Two types of the overprint exist: type 1 with 3 1/2 mm high overprint and type 2 with 2 1/2 mm high overprint:
