Preview of Stamps Catalogue: VOLUME 1 |
Note: on my website many of the
pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.
Click here for Hamburg, cancels. Forged cancels are also described here.
Since the perforated stamps are much cheaper than the imperforate ones, often the perforation has been cut from these cheaper stamps, to make them appear 'imperforate'!
I have been told that this is a Fournier forgery:
The 'S' of 'Schilling' touches the line to the left of it. The '7' is too thin at the bottom, such that the background to the left of it is more visible than in the genuine stamps. Also, note the different shape of the ornament just above the "P" of "POSTMARKE". The door of the castle seems too large at the left hand bottom side of the '7', but the outline of this door is less distinct. I've also seen these forgeries imperforate and with "HAMBURG" in a single circle cancel, bar cancel and also uncancelled. Fournier sold two kinds of forgeries of Hamburg: first choice and second choice. The above ones are apparently 'second choice' forgeries. I could not find the "HAMBURG 5 9" cancel as shown on the second stamp above in the Fournier Album. I've also seen it cancelled with a pattern of small 'teardrops' which were randomly placed.
Fournier's forged cancels taken from a Fournier Album, reduced
sizes
The following forged cancels can be found in 'The
Fournier Album of Philatelic Forgeries':
"HAMBURG BAHNHOF 21 11 65 8-10 1/2 N" in a single
circle
"HAMBURG 13 MAR 1860" between two wavy lines
('Schmetterling' cancel)
Four wavy lines
"HAMBURG 2 9 67 9-10 N" in a single circle
"HAMBURG 5 DEZ 65" in a single circle
"HAMBURG 5/8 66 6-7N" in a single circle
First forgery of the 7 s of Album Weeds (the lilac value was
never issued imperforate)
The above forgery is the first one of the 7 s described in Album Weeds. There are no ornaments below the "S" of "Sieben" or above the "n" of this word. This forgery also exists in the colour yellow (I've seen both the yellow and lilac with perforation as well). By the way, this forgery was also sold by Fournier as 'second choice'. I've seen this forgery cancelled with "HAMBURG" in a circle (no date). Click here for other German States forgeries which were probably made by the same forger.
Probably another forgery of the 7 Sch stamp.
The above forgery is the first one of the 1 s described in Album Weeds. The tail of the "G" in "HAMBURG" is very long. The label containing the word "HAMBURG" touches the left hand frame line (it doesn't in the genuine stamp). By the way, this forgery was also sold by Fournier as 'second choice'. I've seen it with a "HAMBURG" in a single circle cancel (with no date, see third image). The perforated forgery next to it, made by the same forger, has the cancel "HAMBURG 19 8 70. 4N." in a single circle.
Note the different lettering in this 3 Sch forgeries, for example
the slanting "E" in "POSTMARKE".
Another highly dubious 3 Sch stamp.
Another dubious item, the central tongue of the "3" is
pointed. It has a dot above the "R" of
"HAMBURG". This could be the second forgery of the 3
Sch described in Album Weeds.
A forgery with a "909" forged
cancel.
These forgeries of the 1/2 Sch, 1 Sch, 2 Sch and 3 Sch can be
found in Fournier's Album of
Philatelic Forgeries: the cancel is usually (but not always)
"HAMBURG" in a circle with no indication of a date. Click here for other German States forgeries
which were probably made by the same forger.
Another set of badly printed forgeries.
The above badly printed 3 Sch forgery also appears in a Fournier
Album.
The same 2 sch forgery, but now with a barcancel?
The genuine 1/2 Sch stamp should have an open cross at the top of the tower. The vertical line left to "Schilling" is broken just to the left of the "S" (it is disconnected from the ornament below it). The curly ornaments below the "RK" of "POSTMARKE" are not connected to the rest of the label, instead there is a small break.
Forgery with closed cross, vertical line left of "S" of
"Schilling" continuous and note break in the lower
right curly ornament.
On this 1/2 Sch forgery, all the dots on top of the
"i"s are too far away from the main part of this
letter. The "S" of "Schilling" touches the
ornament to the left of it (in genuine stamps it is quite a
distance from it).
A whole sheet of these forgeries. Left with circular cancels and
right with bar cancels.
Another highly dubious 1/2 Sch stamp. Note the bigger stars, the
slightly different lettering and ornaments.
This is a cut from a catalogue I presume, with the perforation
printed.
Other forgery with no watermark on very white paper.
In the genuine 1 Sch stamp, there is a very thin line just above the "UR" of "HAMBURG". A small vertical dash can be observed in the left upper part of the '1'.
This forgery has a very strange bottom part of the "G"
in "HAMBURG". The cross touches the label with
"HAMBURG". The word "POSTMARKE" is written
too large etc.
Other forgery of the 1 Sch, the curly ornaments below the word
"POSTMARKE" are placed in different positions when
compared to a genuine stamp.
The above forgery is described as the first forgery of the 2 1/2 Sch in Album Weeds. The scrolls with "HAMBURG" and "POSTMARKE" are not placed the same as in the genuine stamps. For example, the lower scroll touches the frame line below the "M" and the higher one is placed too low (there is too much space above the "B"). The "K" and "E" in "POSTMARKE" are touching at the bottom in this forgery, and the "O" is too round. This forgery was also sold by the forger Fournier, a picture can be found in 'The Fournier Album of Philatelic Forgeries'. I think the cancel consists only of "HAMBURG" in a circle (without any indication of a date).
Even though Fournier sold these forgeries, I think they were made by another forger. Click here for other German States forgeries which were probably made by the same forger.
Another forgery of the 2 1/2 s. The castle disappears too much
behind the left middle part of the large "2". There is
a white space on the top right hand part of the small
"2", which is not there in the genuine stamps. The
"G" of "HAMBURG" is also different, etc.
Primitive forgery of the 4 Sch green imperforate stamp, note the
different lettering, for example the "B" of
"HAMBURG" (slanting too much to the left) or the
"M" of "POSTMARKE" (too broad). It exists
with a "HAMBURG" without date cancel; click here for other German States forgeries
which were probably made by the same forger.
Other more sophisticated forgery of the 4 Sch value with cancel
"HAMBURG 8 9". I've also seen this forgery with the
cancel "HAMBURG 3 4".
Another forgery of the 4 Sch stamp. The "G" of
"HAMBURG" and the ornaments above the "AM" of
this word are different from the genuine stamp. The ornaments
above the "R" of this word are too low.
Forgery with the "G" of "HAMBURG" different
from the genuine stamps.
4 Sch forgery with stars on top of the towers too large and the
lettering different from the genuine stamps. Also note the
strange ornament above the word 'Vier' and the bogus cancels.
Forgeries of the 9 Sch stamp. Note the strange too round upper
part of the 'g' of 'Schilling'.
Yet another forgery of the 9 Sch with the "OS" of
"POSTMARKE" different.
A forgery of the 9 Sch with the word "POSTMARKE"
written too big. Click here for other
German States forgeries which were probably made by the same
forger. I presume the second stamp has the same cancel as in
the above shown 1 Sch forgery: "HAMBURG 19 8 70. 4N."
in a single circle.
A page of a Fournier Album with forgeries of the 1 1/4 and 2 1/2
Sch; Fournier seems to have sold many shaded of these forgeries.
I'm not sure if Fournier actually made a new set of forgeries, or
sold the reprints as mentioned above.
