Return To Catalogue - United States locals overview - United States

Note: on my website many of the pictures can not be seen! They are of course present in the catalogue;
contact me if you want to purchase it.

WARNING: if not specifically stated that the stamps are genuine, the stamps could be forgeries or reprints!

(Genuine, images obtained from a Siegel auction)

Some very rare stamps with inscription 'PHILA. DESPATCH POST PAID' were issued in 1843. The stamps had a value of 3 c, two colours exist: 3 c black and 3 c red on blue.

1845-1846 Man jumping over the city

(Genuine stamps, images obtained from a Siegel auction)

Genuine
(Reduced sizes, genuine stamps)

D.O.Blood & Co's City Despatch Paid, note the small differences between all the above stamps.

This stamp exists without any inscription (except "CITY DIPATCH POST PAID"), with inscription "D.O. BLOOD & COs" and "D.O. BLOOD & CO's CITY DESPATCH". I'm not sure if all the above stamps are genuine, dangerous forgeries exist.

(Forgery, wrong colour: blue)

Forgeries

Forgery

'Reprints' were made for the Philadelphia Stamp Club in 1955 in a minisheet of 12 stamps (4x3) of the stamps with inscription 'D.O. BLOOD & CO's'.

1846-47 Inscription "FOR THE POST OFFICE CITY DEPATCH PAID D.O.BLOOD & CO."

Type 1: Inscription "THE POST..." in capital letters, "POST" in lower part of circle

(Reduced size, genuine, image obtained from a Siegel auction)

D.O.BLOOD
Forgery? If my information is correct there should be a dot behind "OFFICE" and the "D" of "DESPATCH" touches the circle to the left of it.

Yet another type (or forgery?)

Type 2: Inscription "THE POST" in capital letters, "PAID" in lower part of circle:

Genuine

(Reduced size)

(Genuine)

Type 3: Inscription "the POST", "PAID" in lower part of circle:

1846 Different type, 'For the' instead of 'FOR THE'
Scott forgery of this stamp. a "," behind "For", the "S" of "POST" is too wide and there is a scratch behind the word "OFFICE".

Some bogus issues of "T.WALTER" and "T.DAVIS", clearly inspired by the Blood design.

1848 Pigeon carrying letter

Genuine
(Genuine stamp)

Forgery, look at the different letters, for example the "S" or the "C". The bird's tail is also very white.

Other forgery

(What is this? cancel on a newspaper?)

1848 Small stamp, inscription 'BLOOD's Paid DESPATCH'

(Genuine? reduced size)

  (1 c) gold on black

1850 Small stamp, inscription 'BLOOD'S One Cent DESPATCH'

This might be a Allan Taylor forgery of this stamp.

  (1 c) bronze on black

1853 Small stamps, inscription 'BLOOD'S Penny Post PHILAD'A'

Probably reprints or forgeries:

(Reduced sizes)

1854 Small stamp, inscription 'BLOOD's Post Office Despatch'

(Image obtained from a Siegel auction)

  (1 c) bronze on black

Most likely a forgery.

1855 Head of man

Genuine!
"BLOOD'S PENNY POST KOCHENSPERGER & Co PHILADa"

This stamp is one of the more common local USA stamps.

(Proofs in red and brown)

Unissued stamps:
