The stamps of Straits Settlements are almost always heavily cancelled, most of the time they also bear firm chops (as a protection against theft). Some of them are large enough to cover three individual stamps. The following website https://michelhoude.com/BMSM/Index.html shows many of such chops and provides very useful information. More information on some firms that used these chops: http://seasiavisions.library.cornell.edu/catalog/seapage:233_675. A list of forwarding agents can be found at: http://pbbooks.com/webfa.htm Examples of such chops:

"C.B.I. A.&C." in violet (2 lines) for Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. Next to it a blue double ellipse with "CHARTERED BANK OF INDIA AUSTRALIA & CHINA"; it also exists with a date in the ellipse.

"CHARTERED BANK OF INDIA, AUSTRALIA & CHINA"

"CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA, LONDON & CHINA SINGAPORE" in a large ellipse.

"CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA, LONDON & CHINA SINGAPORE" in a large ellipse.

"CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INIDIA, LONDON & CHINA PAID PENANG" with large "PAID" in the centre of the ellipse

"CHARTERED .... OF INDIA .... PENANG".

"CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA, LONDON & CHINA SINGAPORE", the centre of the ellipse is empty(?)

"E&H.H." see under Hinnekindt

"ESH" in negative in red ink, not sure what is this exactly...

"FORWARDED BY FRASER & Co PENANG"

"FRIEDERICHS & Co PENANG" on a 10 c fiscal stamp.

"GILFILLAN, WOOD & Co SINGAPORE" exists in violet or blue. Also "G.W.&Co." in violet. Also "GILFILLAN WOOD &Co FORWARDED SINGAPORE" (a similar chop exists for Penang?).

"G&Co." from Gutrie & Co in violet.

"H. & S.B.C." in a straight line in violet from Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Cooporation. Next to it a slightly different type with "H.&S.B.C. No...." in two lines in black color some other ones in blue and red.

"H&S.B.Co" and additional "HONGKONG & SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION PENANG".

"H.G.&Co." from Hamilton, Gray & Co (always in red?)

According to http://www.michelhoude.com it should be "HARRISON & CO FORWARDED SINGAPORE", but I think it should be "HARRISON SMITH & Co FORWARDED BY SINGAPORE". An "..ON SMITH & CO SINGAPORE" is listed on that website as well, which appears to be the right side of this chop.

"E&HH" for E&H Hinnekindt.

"E&H HINNEKINDT SINGAPORE" in blue or violet

"HONG-KONG & SHANGHAI BANK CORPORATION SINGAPORE"

"HUTTENBACH BROS. & CO," there are some five different types of the Huttenbach chop.

"A.L.JOHNSTON & Co SINGAPORE." in two lines
