Many types of cancels were used in India, the earliest ones consisting of mute cancels with dots or lines.

Type 1: lozenge with dots
Type 2: Lozenge consisting of lines with number in the center

This system was simplified to letters only a few years after the
introduction, here 'B', 'N' and 'C' for Bombay, Nagpur and
Calcutta.
