INDIA Cancels on early issues

Many types of cancels were used in India, the earliest ones consisting of mute cancels with dots or lines.

Examples of cancels used on early Indian stamps:

Type 1: lozenge with dots

1/2 a blue 2 a green

Type 2: Lozenge consisting of lines with number in the center

Type 3: Octagonal with letters and numbers in the center (see also below):

Letter cancels (1873-1884)


Letter (here "C" for 'Calcutta') with numbers, used from 1873 to 1884.

B - Bombay (Bombay Circle)
C - Calcutta (Calcutta Circle)
D - Dinapore (Bihar Circle)

I - Indore (Central India Circle)
J - Ajmer (Rajputana Circle)
K - Karachi (Sind & Persian Gulf Circle)
L - Lahore (Punjab Circle)
M - Madras (Madras Circle)
N - Nagpur (C.P. Circle)
O - Lucknow (Oudh Circle)
R - Rangoon (Burma Circle)
S - Shillong (Assam Circle)


This system was simplified to letters only a few years after the introduction, here 'B', 'N' and 'C' for Bombay, Nagpur and Calcutta.
