A postal forgery to deceive the authorities of the non-surcharged 25 r brown, also called 'Pera de Satanaz' exists. However forgeries of this forgery (to deceive collectors) also exist. In the London Philatilist Vol.13, 1904, page 144 the following text can be found (with Satanaz misspelt as Jatanaz?):
The post office clerks noticed, towards the end of 1886, that suspicious looking stamps of 25 reis were passing through the post, and their attention was particularly directed to the uneven perforation which these stamps presented. The matter being placed in the hands of the police, they were not long in discovering that an old criminal, bearing the name of Alfredo Alves Mendes (nicknamed "Pera de Jatanaz "), in league with a workman at the Mint, had succeeded in obtaining dies of the 25 reis and 500 reis stamps, as well as stamp paper and ink. The forged stamps of 25 reis were sold, chiefly in the neighbourhood of Lisbon, to unsuspecting persons, and the timely discovery of the forgery prevented the 500 reis die from being utilised by the forger. The perforation was done with a sewing-machine. The forger was tried, found guilty, and condernned to a term of imprisonment.
