The first 138 numeral cancels (puntstempels) were introduced on 1st April 1869. Later more numbers followed (up to 259). It consists of 26 dots (28 for the numbers 1 to 9) with a number in the middle. The last date numeral cancels were used is June 15th 1893.

The range is alphabetical for the numbers 1 to 135, with some exceptions (13: Zaltbommel). On 15th June 1893 all numeral cancels were no longer used. The cancels can be found on all stamps of the Netherlands up to the 1891 issue.

The following envelope shows the use of the 'puntstempel', the stamps were supposed to be cancelled with, elsewhere on the envelope a town/date cancel can be found:

 

These cancels were not supposed to be used on postal stationary. The regulations stated that it could only be used on stamps. Nevertheless, some of these cancels are known to exist on postal stationary (rare).

 

The cancel 'Kamp by Laren' is very rare and is known to have been forged:
