In 1901, the owner made reprints of these stamps, which are actually forgeries (he didn't posess the original printing plates anymore), since the design is slighlty changed. For example, the '1797' does not have a dot behind it in the originals, the reprint has such a dot. There are other differences, for example the right '22 3' is different from the genuine stamp. The stamp dealer Karl Sternheim from Berlin-Schoneberg bought these forgeries, thinking they were genuine. When the truth came out in 1902, Sternheim sued the owner, who then ended up in prison.
This stamp was privately reprinted by the printing firm Gehringer in 1978. The stamp is printed in a minisheet with inscription 'HANSA '78 20. bis 22. Oktober 1978 in Lubeck-Travemunde Nachdruck Lubecker Stadtpostmarke von 1897 Gehringer Kaiserslautern'. On the backside of the stamp is printed 'Nachdruck HANSA '78'.
